
Heatmaps Explained — What They Are and How to Use Them
Heatmaps turn thousands of user sessions into a single visual layer. Here's how click maps, scroll maps, and move maps work — and how to actually act on what you see.
A heatmap is an aggregated view of user behavior across your page. Instead of watching individual sessions one by one, a heatmap collapses thousands of them into a single color-coded overlay: hot colors (red, orange) where users engage most, cool colors (blue, purple) where they don't.
The result is instant pattern recognition. You can see in five seconds whether your call-to-action is being clicked, whether users are reading your pricing, or whether your navigation is drawing attention away from the main content.
The Three Types of Heatmaps
Click Maps
Click maps show where users click, tap, and interact with elements on the page. Every click is recorded as a coordinate, and those coordinates are aggregated across all sessions to show density.
What to look for:
- Clicks on non-interactive elements — if users are clicking on a heading or image that isn't a link, they expect it to be one. This is a design signal.
- Ignored CTAs — if your primary button is cold, either it's not visible enough, not compelling, or users aren't reaching it.
- Rage clicks — rapid repeated clicks on an element that doesn't respond. This is frustration made visible.
Scroll Depth Maps
Scroll maps show what percentage of visitors scroll to each point on the page. The top of the page is always 100% (everyone sees it). The percentage drops as you move down.
The critical number is the "fold" — the point where your most important content is. If 60% of visitors never scroll past the hero section, everything below it is invisible to more than half your audience.
Use scroll maps to answer:
- Does anyone read to the end of this page?
- Is our pricing table visible to most visitors?
- Where does attention drop off — and is there anything we can do above that point to pull users deeper?
Move Maps
Move maps track where users move their cursor on desktop. Cursor movement is a reasonable proxy for eye movement — people tend to look where they move the mouse.
Move maps are most useful for identifying which blocks of text users are actually reading, and which they're skipping over.
How to Read a Heatmap
The colors are relative, not absolute. Red doesn't mean "a lot of clicks" in absolute terms — it means the most clicks relative to the rest of the page. A page with very low overall engagement will still have a red zone; it just represents less actual interaction than a high-traffic page.
This matters because a cold CTA on a high-traffic page is a serious problem. A cold CTA on a page with 50 visitors a month might not be worth optimizing at all.
Always read heatmaps alongside your traffic data. A cold zone on a page with 20,000 monthly visitors is a high-priority fix. The same cold zone on a page with 200 visitors might not move the needle even if you fix it.
Filter by Device
Mobile and desktop heatmaps are almost always different — and often dramatically so.
On mobile, above-the-fold content is much smaller. Scroll behavior is different (thumb-driven, easier to scroll). Click targets need to be larger. Users on mobile often have different intent than desktop users.
Always generate separate heatmaps for mobile and desktop before drawing conclusions. A CTA that performs well on desktop but is consistently missed on mobile is a mobile layout problem, not a copy problem.
Heatmaps vs. Session Replays
Heatmaps and session replays answer different questions.
Heatmaps tell you what the pattern is across many users. They're statistical. They show you that 78% of users never see your pricing table, or that the "Start Free Trial" button gets far fewer clicks than the "Learn More" link next to it.
Session replays tell you why for individual users. Once a heatmap identifies a problem — say, users aren't clicking the main CTA — you filter your replays to sessions where users visited that page and left without clicking it, and watch what they did instead.
The two tools are most powerful when used together: heatmaps to find the pattern, replays to understand the cause.
Common Mistakes
Drawing conclusions from too little data. A heatmap from 50 sessions is mostly noise. Wait until you have at least 200–500 sessions on a page before treating the pattern as meaningful.
Ignoring mobile. Looking only at the desktop heatmap when 60% of your traffic is mobile will lead you in completely the wrong direction.
Optimizing for clicks instead of conversions. A high-click area isn't always a good thing. If users are repeatedly clicking on your FAQ section before leaving, they may be confused — not engaged.
Not re-running heatmaps after changes. A heatmap is a snapshot. If you redesign a page, you need fresh data. Comparing a post-redesign conversion rate to the old heatmap tells you nothing useful.
